How the CDL Knowledge Test Works
Before you can get a commercial learner's permit (CLP), you pass one or more written knowledge tests at your state DMV. The General Knowledge test usually has 50 multiple-choice questions, and you need 80% to pass. Each endorsement you add has its own shorter test. A free CDL practice test lets you see the same kinds of questions first, so test day has no surprises.
After you hold your CLP for at least 14 days, and complete Entry-Level Driver Training if it applies to you, you can take the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and the road test.

How to Study for the CDL Test
- Read the matching section of your state CDL manual.
- Take one free practice test for that section and read every explanation.
- Retake the test until you score 90% or higher on two attempts in a row.
- Move to the next section, then finish with a full General Knowledge test.
